The Gaia Movement uses Jatropha in their project:

Rehabilitation of mopane woodlands in Namibia by planting live hedges, 
a
nd introducing a simple biogas system

5.000 Jatophas and 1.000 sisals are ready 
to be planted out at new homesteads and schools

These plants grow in an area with very little tainfall - the average in the area is 3-400 mm a year - but they are so strong because they get some additional waste water from nearby households. It is said, that the plants also survive in the areas where they have not been watered at all, even with poorer rain than normal.
